Children’s Fitness and Quality of Movement

    Get PDF
Introduction: Movement is essential to life and plays a key role in development throughout childhood. Movement can be assessed by its quantity and quality. Movement is important to measure as it can aid early intervention. Current research suggests that global levels of fitness are declining, with a lack of research surrounding children’s natural fitness levels as they get older. Quantity of movement is commonly studied, however quality is becoming increasingly popular. A clear understanding of the methods of technology used to measure quality of movement is important as understanding this area will aid in designing appropriate interventions. Methods: This thesis comprises of two experimental studies. Study one is a repeated measures design using previously collected Swanlinx data to investigate how components of children’s fitness change over a one-year period. Study two is a scoping review investigating the measurement of quality of movement with technology in the form of MEM’s devices, while aiming to gain clarity on the definition of quality. Results: Study one revealed that children’s fitness levels increase across a one-year period, in all components of fitness, except sit and reach. Boys performed significantly better in all fitness components, apart from sit and reach. Study two demonstrated the broad field that is included under the term of quality, showing clarity is needed in this area. A large number of devices, movements and populations are being observed, with multiple definitions of quality which is dependent on the metrics collected. Conclusion: Study one concludes that children’s fitness levels increase over one-year, with boys performing better than girls. This can be used to understand children’s natural fitness levels and aid future interventions in participation. Study two concludes that there are multiple ways to assess quality of movement however a clear definition of the quality should be stated, aiding comparison of quality

Southern ground game: the Democratic model for voter outreach

The 2016 election saw a substantial field operation in the South for the Democratic campaign. To measure its effects, this paper looks at the impact of respondent proximity to field office and its impact on voter turnout, vote choice, and various mechanisms of voter contact. Successful field programs would have positive impacts across all of those fields

David CassidayIn 2013, the United States spent an average of $1000 per capita on prescription medication, over 40% more than any other country.1 High prescription medication costs have led people to skip filling prescription medications in order to save money. In 2013, one in five US adults did not fill a prescription due to expense.1 These costs have been challenging for many Americans, but have been particularly taxing for adults under 65 without prescription drug coverage.2 Many people without coverage are forced to decide between purchasing medication or paying the bills. High medication costs have resulted in 45% of people, without prescription coverage, skipping filling a prescription within the past year.2 To save money some patients are also not taking the prescriptions as directed. Thirty one percent of patients skipped a scheduled dose and 19% cut pills in half without the approval of a doctor or pharmacist

College Students and Their Political Participation

Historically, college students have had a low voter turnout despite having particularly high political engagement. This is a problem because it is instilling a bad habit of not politically engaging to the extent that a productive United States citizen should. By not voting, Americans are losing their rights to representation that reflects their views and beliefs. In this paper I discuss why this low voter turnout is negative and what the United States can do, via the government and educational institutions, to increase voter turnout. In this research, the reader will discover the reasons for low voting rates among college students, the reasons for high political engagement, and ways to solve the low voting rates. The solutions include modification of voting laws, increased communication of voting, the understanding of the importance of political participation in the United States, increased civic education and civic-based programs, and the engagement of students while learning about civics. This research concludes that by enacting these solutions, it will increase college students\u27 voter turnout substantially

BL and danmei, two terms meaning male x male fiction in Japan and China respectively, are popular genres for young women in East Asia. This paper compares BL and danmei, which are connected by history and definition, but have a few key differences. Namely, differences that are due to Chinese censorship and Japan\u27s relative lack thereof and differences in distribution. These differences leading to China\u27s danmei fandom being more insular and almost entirely online in contrast to Japan\u27s slightly more public BL fandom

Threads of Identity: Marisol\u27s Exploration of Self

Marisol Escobar, known in the 1960s as the Latin Garbo, is a sculptor famous for showing with the Pop art greats. However, Marisol holds a curious position in art history, stranded between the formalism of the fifties\u27 and sixties\u27 male-dominated Pop movement and the conceptual experimentation and radicalism that followed. Trained as a draftsman and painter early in her career, Marisol\u27s main body of work mostly consists of large-scale wooden and mixed-medium sculpture. Lesser known, her lithographs, drawings, collages and small figurines further prove her technical and artistic validity. Preferring to go by surname only, Marisol’s quiet yet intense observation pinpoints the overriding human elements present in the objects of her scrutiny. Most notable for turning her gaze inwards, her self-portraiture defies easy categorization. Meshing American art and non-Western art styles while bridging the gap between intellectual understanding and empathetic approachability, Marisol represents a unique perspective that remains relevant today. Marisol\u27s approach to self-portraiture is, first and foremost, in service to the exploration of her own identity. Furthermore, her choice of subject matter, artistic methodology and style appear closely aligned with Postmodern discourse. Each period of her work from the 1950s to the present day includes different guises and methods that subtly critique societal roles and norms, all presented through the lens of the artist\u27s acute wit. Internationalism, gender roles, and explorations of identity are inherent in each of her works, proving that Marisol deserves further examination to explore her relation to Postmodern thought
